It’s scary when God is doing something new. But more importantly we don’t always recognize that is what is happening. Instead we see something different and scary. We only see our comfort zone being shifted, or that the safe answer is no longer an option. We don’t even realize He is doing something new.
It’s easy to forget the potter and the clay.
Jeremiah 18
1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2 “Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will let you hear[a] my words.” 3 So I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was working at his wheel. 4 And the vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter’s hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to do. 5 Then the word of the Lord came to me: 6 “O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter has done? declares the Lord. Behold, like the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel.
It’s easy to forget that when our life is broken that we may need to go on down to the potter’s house and let Him do something new.
Sometimes we forget that a closed door is just that. We keep beating for it to let us back in, and we neglect to see that a closed door can be the way of telling us to move on down the hall. He’s doing something new.
Many times we think that when we’re waiting it’s a lonely place, but we are not alone. We fear the uncertain, the unknown, but we are in His hand.
Isaiah 43:2-3a
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior;
When God is doing something new we may only see our needs, and we forget our provider. We trust in horses and chariots, when we should be trusting His name. We lose sight of Him making a way, and we forget that nothing is impossible with God.
Isaiah 43:19
See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.
When God is doing something new we don’t have to struggle or fret, but rather we can rest easy. We can breathe a sigh of relief, hanging on in the warm peace that He is in control. Sometimes you just gotta let go of the steering wheel and hand over your life. He’s doing something new, and instead of fear, feel excited. For the fact is He adores you with such a special love that always has your best interest in mind. So when He’s doing something new, it’s to make a better way.
And we still remember the potter.
It isn’t always easy being in the fire, being molded, being corrected, or being changed. But the final product is always one of unique beauty.

What a wonderful devotion to start my day! God puts so many examples within His own creation to help us learn how He wants to develop us for His glory! I am reminded of another example from God’s creation and that is when a forest or field of grass burns! I watched a documentary about the fire that burned huge portions of Yellowstone several years back and how new life sprang from the burned out forest floor to develop into a fresh new home for all of God’s creatures! How many examples there are of lives that seemed all hope was gone but God, the master potter, worked miracles in a life yielded to Him! There is hope in the ashes and in the blob of broken clay and that hope comes from a life surrendered to the Master!
