This isn’t a post for people who don’t have children and don’t want them. God gives us all unique desires, and if you don’t desire to start a large family, then don’t. If being single is your calling then go for that. After all, Paul said it was the best. If you’re content with one child then please just have one. Don’t feel pressured to have more. We each must walk the specific path God has for us. But if you are worried about having children, whether by birth or adoption, then this post is for you.
I wish I had a dollar for all the many people I have heard or seen say something like, “I just don’t know about bringing children into this world!”
I mean, I get it. I’ve even thought it in the past. You’ll hear “this world is headed to hell in a hand-basket,” you’ll watch the news, or you’ll simply scroll your Facebook newsfeed. It’s true, this world is full of evil, hateful people who have no desire but to hurt those around them. There’s war, poverty, rape, abuse, murder, and bad presidents. There’s bullying, social media, and a worsening view of reality at large. My husband is quick to say that social media is the downfall of man, and if you spend any time in the comments section of controversial posts such as articles on abortion or Donald Trump, then you’ll probably agree with him. This world stinks! And that’s exactly why you need to have children!
If you are a Christian who is fearful to raise a child in an evil world then I want you to stop and take a breath. Stop for a moment and realize that this rotten world is precisely why you are called to have children. If you’re a Christian then you understand your biggest job in this world is to love Jesus, love people, and show them how to love Jesus too. We are all a part of the Great Commission, but it may not always entail becoming a missionary or minister. Or does it?
As a Christian you can minister to those you encounter each day, you can make a mission field at your job or in line at Walmart, and you can be a part of creating a bright future. As Christians we are called to be a light in this dark world, but if we’re not fruitful and multiplying then there will be no future generation that can spread the love of Christ. You shouldn’t be afraid to bring children into this world. You should feel compelled to do so. You should feel honored to raise the next generation of Jesus followers and love spreaders. This world needs it!
